Redefining physical security at Rosebank Towers
Rosebank Towers is the tallest building in the Rosebank CBD with 14 floors above street level comprising 23 000m2 lettable office space and seven levels of parking below. Perfectly situated, with the Gautrain and Rea Vaya bus network acting as catalysts by improving access and reducing cars on the roads, the building is home to Redefine and a number of its tenants.
Retail elements such as street cafés and bespoke shops, outdoor entertainment, leisure spots, arts and culture have all added to the revitalisation of the node, bringing increased pedestrian traffic to the area. The building is a best-in-its-class, P-grade, Green Star SA rated development and has a 360° view over the Sandton CBD and skyline.

Improving the throughflow of pedestrian traffic into the building was deemed a priority so the company elected to install Turnstar’s Speedgate Express lanes in its reception area. The building’s striking entrance provides visual prominence with a sweeping glass façade on a plinth of natural stone. The design and the materials used in the manufacture of the Speedgates ensured that the aesthetic appeal was maintained, while still substantially improving security for all.
“We supplied five 650 mm wide Speedgate Express lanes, one 900 mm wide Speedgate Express lane and 25 metres of frameless glass barrier at Rosebank Towers. Cognisant of the need to provide a visually seamless installation, we matched the handrails to the existing hand rail in the building. We also devised a plan for all cables to be routed through the hand rail, thereby further guaranteeing an attractive, professional finish,” says Craig Sacks, MD of Turnstar.
The Speedgate Express is ideally suited to upmarket buildings like Rosebank Towers, and provides ultra-high-speed access. The manufacturing process of the 304 grade brushed stainless steel cabinets includes 3D design and precision laser cutting of the components. Each cabinet is hand-made with expert welding and polishing to create a superior finish.
The 900 mm wide Speedgate lane is perfectly suited for pedestrians requiring specialised access, for example those in wheelchairs, or those using shopping trolleys or baby pushchairs. “This extra wide Speedgate removes the frustration often felt by pedestrians trying to negotiate through a standard width lane access and the safety feature apparent in all our Speedgate lanes ensures that the glass wings will not ‘accidentally’ close on a pedestrian passing through the lane,” says Sacks.
Equipped with highly sophisticated anti-tamper detection, the Speedgate lanes prevent tailgating, unauthorised direction and ‘crawling’. In addition, a series of detectors are used to prevent closing when a person or object is in the closing envelope, thereby increasing safety of operation.
