Turnstiles for The Johannesburg Expo Centre

Every year, hundreds of thousands of people enter and exit the Johannesburg Expo Centre (NASREC) show grounds in the south of Johannesburg. Home to the iconic Rand Show as well as a number of high-profile industrial and consumer shows such as Electra Mining, The Start Interbuild Africa show, Bauma Conexpo Africa and the Soweto Festival, the show grounds contain 50 000 m² of exhibition space indoors, 100 000 m² of outdoor space, 4 000 m² of conference rooms, a multi-purpose arena that can accommodate 20 000 people and more than 15 000 parking bays.

Logistics are a major issue for the management of the facility and the selection of 45 Trident waist height turnstiles was based on a pre-existing relationship between the client and Turnstar. The turnstiles have a solid reputation in the market and are featured at a number of high-profile stadia including Green Point and Bloemfontein, where controlled access of ticket holders is of prime importance. Over 180 Turnstar turnstiles were installed at Soccer City Stadium across the road from the Expo Centre for the 2010 FIFA World Cup.

The turnstiles are being used at the entrance to a number of areas and will control access into the 10 exhibition halls, eight terraces, offroad track, technical and workshop areas and the visitor arena. A unique ticketing system is being fitted by the customer’s 3^rd party supplier.

In order to accommodate wheelchair access, three Special Needs Gates were installed and which provide a walkthrough opening of 850mm, wide enough for any standard trolley, pram or wheelchair.
